By my reckoning , almost kinda sorta halfway there

So here it is , Saturday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend and I have been out of work / retired now for about six weeks. Getting used to it. Doing fairly well keeping up with the laundry and planning menus , making Twila a meal every now and then , cleaning up the kitchen , loading and unloading the dishwasher . Not yet a full-blown domestic god but kinda sorta edging into it . I've also been working on unemployment , Social Security , and I just got a letter that says I'm now signed up for Medicare A AND B - so it would appear that I now have a permanent seat on the government ride. Yay me.

Twila is still working for the school district and school has already started here for this year. Even though she said she was looking forward to a relaxing , 3 day holiday weekend , she graciously agreed to help me with planting some more cacti and succulents in the front yard work-in-progress. We compromised on a number of locations for plants to be put in the ground and she decided to take some pix of me working up a sweat. I'm starting to believe this is actually going to look pretty good when we decide it's more or less complete.

Anybody looking at the dates of these posts or comparing the various states of progress ( some more apparent than others ) might be prone to note that this is slow going. True. But I am an old guy with an arthritic condition and it is very hot and humid here in August and I am in no hurry to be done . Slow but steady wins the race but I am not in competition here in any way , shape , or form and it will be done when it's done . Y'all can get behind that , right ?

The stone edging is still only half done , there are a number of plants still to be put in place ( my wife vetoed my idea of leaving some in decorative pots and planters because there would then be a need for a much more aggressive watering scheme than what we were trying to achieve ) and let's not forget the concrete centerpiece which is still waiting to be completed , plus there will need to be about 20 or so more bags of marble chips to be spread around over the newspaper we spread to try to keep weeds down. Whee doggies but aint we having some fun now ?

In the last picture above you can see ( somewhat ) the smaller flower bed on the other side of the sidewalk in front of the house. That may or may not be the next project - it's most likely to be either that or the back yard ( I am SO wanting to get started on filling the new back yard fencing with all of my ideas. Like - that plywood Texas silhouette currently sitting in the rubber edging form in the center of the yard ? It's going up on the fence somewhere after being painted or varnished or flame-washed and varnished . Also plan to stand it up against the fence and overspray it to create a paint outline of the state . We got this Texas thing going on.
Got to organize my thoughts about getting some DONORA and STEELERS stuff going on too. Twila is talking about a TEXANS logo but I am a black and gold boy and think THAT should come first. A quick story. When I first moved to Texas , my first REAL job ( not counting the 6 months as a Wendy's manager) was with a company that made downhole oil well tools. The stuff made there , when completed , was painted Columbia Blue , which happened to be the team color for the then Houston Oilers. I had been working there for about a year when I went back to my hometown of Donora, Pa. for a weeks vacation. At the time ,my mother-in-law worked at a HALLMARK store there and when I went to see her there to say hello I picked up just over a dozen refrigerator magnets and small pencil sharpeners in the shape and black and gold colors of the PITTSBURGH STEELERS complete with their logo. When I returned to work I went in early on the first morning back and put either a magnet or sharpener on the desk of every co-worker in my wing of the building. One of my duties every morning was to make the rounds of the plant ,collecting reports of work progress for all the different departments , then making copies of all those reports and distributing them to my co-workers. As I was making my rounds I was paged to report to first one shop and then another , and then another . This sometimes happened as they updated the reports of work in progress so I thought nothing of it - until I got back to my desk. Where I found every single one of my " gifts " lined up on my desk, And they had all been painted Columbia Blue.

some random stuff

It's Friday 8/29 and finally raining , so I get to slack off. Not a busy week , but I got some of the plants in the ground and on my last trip to Lowes I got the quikrete for the state form. Maybe do that next week after Twila and I get a few more plants in the ground. Things are starting to shape up , but using a Malibu to haul the materials is slow going . Lots and lots of bags of marble chips and plenty more still to go.According to the weather man it should start to cool down ( to the 70's and 80's ) in about 4 to 6 weeks. Fall can't get here too soon to suit me . My list of projects both large and small continues to grow , but I'm going to finish this monster in the front yard before I tackle anything else.
Now for that random stuff.
I told in an earlier post about my uncle in West Virginia encouraging me to keep after this project. He was at one time ( long ago ) the Acting Dean of Students at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh , and for a variety of reasons left that and moved to 40 acres in the mountains of West Virginia near Buckhannon. His acreage was essentially 20 acres like / and 20 acres like \ and when he first moved there , he was 7 miles from the nearest paved road. Maybe a little exaggeration there - but actually , not much. Initially , he and his wife and some friends lived in tents and cooked over an open campfire as they used hand tools to build a one room cabin. Their place has evolved and grown considerably over the years and I will try to get some pictures because now the place is really something. They very graciously allowed me to spend several spring breaks with them while I was going to college and I have very pleasing memories of earning my keep by helping them with a number of chores. I helped collect truck loads of old sawdust from the site of an abandoned sawmill by the Buchannon River. Lay planks in order to back up to the 50 foot pile of leavings , shovel it into the bed of the truck until the tires started to flatten out , and then shovel in into wheelbarrows and transfer it to the garden for mulch . Getting there was somewhat of an adventure as we had to travel on what I would have to call wilderness tracks , not really roads , which would switchback up and down over a number of ridges before getting to the river. The track actually continued on the other side of the river but it was fast flowing and deep enough that the only way across was by amphib or boat as far as I could see. We made several trips and saw deer , wild turkeys ( you should see those things RUN up the side of a hill that you could barely stand upright on ) and the hillside beside the river was where we went to gather wild ramps which I highly recommend to anyone who has never tried them. BUT - they will make you stink.
One year , my "chore" was to help clear trees and brush from the right of way for their power line ( yes -they finally got electricity ). If they didn't clear the power line , the electric company would spray along the right-of-way with defoliant which would then get into the garden and water table ( ALL water was hand carried to the house from several springs ) so this was pretty important . The stretch I was tasked to clear was about 100 yards up one side of a hill above the house and then another 100 to 150 yards down the other side. Using a scythe ,a brush hook and an axe( and a file for sharpening ) I spent the best part of the first day working my way up this steep , overgrown hill. The next morning when I got back to it - and I was getting pretty good at hacking through the 2" and 3" thick saplings with that brush hook - I finally crested that hill and looked down at a FOREST. This side of the hill got most of the sun and was sincerely and severely overgrown. Endeavor to persevere. It took me most of the rest of the week but I did finally get to the road at the base of that hill.
This is getting kind of long and not what I wanted to talk about , but - what the hell - one more memory. On another spring break we went out to the site of where they were drilling several gas wells and had cut down all the trees to clear the drilling site. All of the cabin heating and cooking was done using wood stoves - several of them , and one of the first structures erected other than the cabin , was the woodshed. We spent a couple of days collecting truck load after truck load of logs from these clearings. The logs had to be cut into 18" sections using a bow saw and then split with a maul and then stacked. I spent several full days in the woodshed sawing , splitting , and stacking while it SNOWED . Not your typical spring break.

NOW -what I wanted to tell you . We were recently together for a niece's wedding in Seattle and I got to talking with my uncle and aunt and reminiscing and I asked if they still were doing those things I had done while on break. They told me that the garden had been essentially abandoned because the trees on their place had grown to such an extent that they were kinda sorta living in the woods now. When I talked to them recently my uncle said he now had proof that they were actually living in the woods. He had been sitting in what is now his "den " and looked out the window to see a bear nosing around on the hillside below the cabin. He called to his wife , " come look , there's a bear out there. " She opened the door and went out on their deck and made motions and noises , encouraging the bear to depart , which the bear did in somewhat of a hurry. But not before leaving a large deposit as a reminder of it's presence. My uncle said " this proves two things : one - your aunt can and will scare the crap out of a bear. And two - we are definitely living in the woods now , because THAT IS WHERE BEARS POOP."

This has certainly gone on for longer than I intended ,so I'll suspend here and when next we meet I hope to tell you about further yard art progress AND another uncle - this time my mom's younger brother who at one time was a big deal at NASA.

Progress

Regardless of the seemingly relentless heat I was spurred on to activity on my yard art centerpiece. This was partly due to an uncle reading my blog and sending me the advice " don't leave a project a half-finished eyesore waiting for inspiration as to how to successfully complete the project. Just get after it and sweat and diligence will provide the path you seek ". Okay.
I thought digging out the trench around the plywood silhouette was difficult. Under a very thin layer of topsoil , it was just heavy, dense clay and trying to dig was like trying to carve a brick. I had envisioned just making a thin line around the plywood but this proved to be too difficult , so after pinning the plywood piece in place with some heavy duty spikes , I actually troughed out about a shovel width all the way around.
NOTE : agave leaves come to a point that is very sharp and they will puncture the incautious and unwary - repeatedly .
Looking at the state outline from hindsight I can truly see that my choice of that rubber edging was possibly not the best solution for building my form as it proved to be a lot less flexible than I had anticipated and the state of Texas has quite a few sharp angles and corners. BUT - being stubborn - I persevered ( endeavor to persevere - love that line from Chief Dan George in The Outlaw Josie Wales ) and eventually made my way completely around the piece.
Tired , dirty , punctured ,and VERY sweaty I had Twila take a picture of me with my almost completed visionary work of art. I backfilled all around the piece with the rock I'm using to cover the yard.
I was feeling a little rocky today after indulging in beer and poker at my favorite dive bar last night ,and it's still very hot and sunny even though we were supposed to have rain today , so i limited my activity to a run to Lowes where I got more stones for the overall edging which still needs to be completed ,a few more bags of marble chips to be spread around , several bags of quikrete , some more spikes to help " fine-tune " the rubber edging form , and several different types of hooks for mounting my back yard art on the lattice which will be installed against the new fencing. When I say worktodoworktodo I'm not kidding.
I've been trying to engage Twila's help deciding on the placement of all the plants we've been gathering for this rock garden, but I'm beginning to suspect that she is holding back , allowing the entire project to be " my inspiration and perspiration ".
SO - next up is more shovel work to get the plants in the ground , finish the edging stonework , remove the plywood and mix/pour/finish the concrete , and then spread the marble chips over the rest of the yard. Slowly but surely it is coming together. Still trying to decide what to do with the flowerbed on the other side of the front sidewalk. I'm sure some ridiculous notion will eventually rear it's ugly head and I'll be "on the job " again.

A couple more days in the life

Unfortunately , there is nothing really new to share this week. It has just been too hot and Twila has repeatedly warned and advised me to severely curtail my outside activity as there are heat advisories and aerial spraying in our area for mosquitoes because of outbreaks of West Nile Virus. Also , my plan to surround my Texas cutout to make a form for the concrete map has hit a snag. My yard has only a very thin layer of topsoil and underneath is heavy , heavy , dense clay. Even after sharpening my hatchet ,trowels ,and shovel with a file and then my kitchen knife sharpener I am unable to make any real headway for the depth of trench I need to partially bury the rubber edging that will comprise my concrete form. It is like trying to put a groove in a brick. Time for a new plan. Sure hope I can come up with one.
What I have decided to do for now is recover the square that will be the site of my concrete state with newspaper weighted down with boards ,stones etc and wait for both inspiration and cooler weather. In the meantime I'm hoping to enlist Twila's help in getting a portion if not all of our current collection of cacti and succulents into the ground so they will have a chance of surviving. I'll probably also try to finish this portion of the stones surrounding this large part of the yard and spreading some more marble chips.
Depending on how any or all of that goes , maybe we can start deciding on placement of our existing "art " on the new fence in the back yard and then I can work on nailing it all up - a relatively simple matter that should not afflict or affect me as much as digging in the heat.
While the heat has discouraged outdoor activity , I have been generating some heat indoors , wrestling with various government entities and people wanting to put me back to work. In order to qualify for unemployment , I have to apply and send resumes to online job postings ( MONSTER , HOTJOBS , Work in Texas , etc . ) and I'm getting calls from various HR types wanting to know my salary requirements , the nature of my disability , availability , and so forth.I am amazed that these companies would even CONSIDER hiring someone my age , the dates on my resume clearly allow anyone to do the math and come up with at least my approximate age.
I also have been trying to make sure everything is copacetic with Social Security and get lined up and signed up for Medicare part B as my company health coverage expires at the end of this month. After a false start at the office I was told to go to down near the Astrodome ,where I was informed that I needed a form from my previous employer , I was able to secure all needed documentation and had a very pleasant and rewarding sit-down next day at the ( much closer to home ) Conroe office where a very engaging and helpful young man answered all my questions and got me squared away.
Now if only Mother Nature would cooperate and dial it back about 20 degrees I could get this home improvement (?) show back on track. As a side note , what with having to provide my own meals and the outside exercise and furious sweating , I have managed to lose over 10 pounds in the last month and get some color on my pasty fat body. If enough people read this and ask Twila , I may even let her take some pix of me in manual labor mode for y'all to enjoy.

Texas in the front yard - lots of stuff in the back

I was driving around Tomball trying to find a teachers supply store to buy a wall map of Texas to cut out and outline on my plywood which would then be put in the square seen in an earlier pic . I'm going to install some thin rubber edging around the plywood , remove the plywood ,and then fill the resulting "form" with sakrete.
The wall map would have cost about $50 according to what I found online ( never DID find the teacher's supply store ). The bad boy above was hanging on the outside wall of an " antiques store " .When I asked if it was for sale ,I was told there was NO WAY they would part with it. I asked if I could rent or borrow it for a couple of days so I could trace the outline on my plywood. When I explained why I was doing it , they gave me a huge smile and said I could borrow it if they got a plug in my blog.
THANK YOU VERY , VERY MUCH N. CHERRY STREET ANTIQUES.
The lovely and talented Twila bought some poster board and made a cardboard cutout of the silhouette and I have traced it on several 4'x4' sheets of plywood - several things in mind for those after the concrete form is completed. One is going to hang on my fence , and one is going in my screen room. Twila and I went to the Tomball Farmer's Market this morning and there was a guy with a booth there who did laser wood burning of signs , re-creation of photos , lots of cool stuff. His rig cannot handle something 4' x 4' so we agreed to his making me a stencil which will be in several pieces and say " Welcome to Porchview " which will in one way or another be impressed upon the state outline. I also plan to cover one of the plywood cutouts and place it against the new fencing and overspray it ,giving me an outline to work within. What's going to be in there is a mystery at this point ,but hey - work in progress , ya know? Maybe a small texans helmet and a great big STEELER logo. Yeah , baby.

I look at all that blank , new fence and my head starts to spin with all the ideas I have for "yard art ". If even half of it turns out how I hope it will I will call it a success.
In the first backyard picture you can see a stack of lattice sheets which used to be on the fence but had to be taken down when the new fences went up. They will be going back up along with the texas outline and another texas piece. My mind is just churning with all the possibilities for expression. Maybe a guest section where visitors can feel free to express themselves. Maybe my family will come to visit if they can hang something within my " show ".

I feel this experience is literally BURSTING with possibility ,and if it weren't so damn hot I would be ruining my health and my bank balance trying to do all the things i have begun to imagine.

And , oh yeah ,the model train layout. It's still on the to-do list ,just not at the top of the list right now.
But soon. Has to be ready for xmas , right Jim ?

work in progress

I am lining this section of the yard along the walk with some 3"x 8" blocks and then the remainder of the yard will be covered with white stone shown behind the blocks.

It took almost 2 hours to plant that small palm in front of me. The yard has a few inches of topsoil and then several feet of heavy , compacted clay which needs to be really worked to get out of the hole. The wheelbarrow has a "sandwich" of one layer garden dirt , then several inches of sand , then more dirt. Since we are planning to plant all cactus and succulents ,we figured this would make them all feel more at home. We currently have about 2 dozen more plants to go between this section of the yard and the smaller flowerbed on the other side of the front walk which will be getting the same treatment ( clear , paper mulch ,and cover with rock.

Hot, Hot, Hot

The heat index finally went below 100 ( no,really ) and some guys were out there working to replace my fences and gates so i put on my steel toe boots and a headband and my KENNYWOOD t-shirt ( today is DONORA Kennywood Day ) and got a solid couple of hours of effort into the project . First I picked a spot for where my concrete state of texas ( right now it's just a 4x4 piece of plywood ) and framed it in with some scrap lumber to keep an open work buffer around it. Then I spread the first dozen bags of marble chips around and tenatively placed some of the plants ( awaiting Twila discussion/approval before actually committing anything into the ground ). Placing the plants now precludes my having to relocate a lot of stone after Twila input. Did I mention that it's only in the mid-nineties today ?
The next step was to start placing edging stones along the sidewalk. Dug out a 4" wide by 1" deep trough next to the sidewalk and leveled the bottom ( more or less ) . After placing and seating the stones I pulled them all back out in order to lay down newspaper under them ( same as I used to cover the yard ) , reseated them and then emptied several bags of rocks behind them . Did I mention that it is a sunny , mostly cloud-free day with temp in the mid-nineties ? Since I woke up this morning I have downed a quart of unsweetened tea and 6 bottles of water . You would think there would be a pee break in there somewhere , right (start about 9 , quit before 2 ) ?
A word of caution here for anyone thinking this sounds like fun. Well , actually , it is. HOWEVER - Texas in August , over 65 and arthritically disabled DOES make it challenging . BUT - I conceived it . I thought about it . Hell , I've DREAMED about -most of my best ideas about this have come in my sleep. I've started it and , admittedly taking my time doing it , I'm going to realize it. Actually I'm just delaying working on my model train layout , but I have been thinking and dreaming about THAT too. More blog everybody !!

Actually , I think I need to take new pix when the sun is not quite so bright, Did I mention it was a hot , sunny day ? I hope to also add some pix of my new gates and fences for " before" shots and then again after Twila and I situate all of our other yard art. Not exactly a model home or showcase ,but what the hell , OUR place

Howdy everybody. Now that I have been kicked to the curb for the final time , bringing my working life to a close , I find myself needing to devise ways to fill my time.
We have a large , mature oak tree in the front of the house that we neglected for quite a while. It repaid this benign neglect by shading and killing all the grass , flowers ,and other plantings in the front of the house. Looking at this barren mess now that we have thinned and trimmed the tree we got the idea to use my newly gained excess of free time to create something personal and/or unique. We decided to create a rock/cactus/succulent garden with a distinctly Texas flavor.

Dead ground.

My lovely daughter Hallie was here visiting for a week and wanted to help , so first we raked off what scraggly growth we still had and removed the old bricks which had defined a flower bed. We raked the plot smooth and then covered the ground with Chronicle mulch to discourage future weed growth.
Ready to be transformed.

When next I have the time and energy ( and it isn't over 100 heat index )I have some stones to be placed along the sidewalk forming the work area , which I will then cover with rock chips. At some point I will be creating a 4' x4' outline of Texas ( I actually think I thought of a pretty cool way to do this ).
